What Was It About?

A limited-run true crime podcast about a famous sculptor (Carl Andre) and his up-and-coming artist wife (Ana Mendieta) who ‘fell’ out of the window of their 34th floor apartment in NYC. Andre was charged with murder—splitting the art world in two—but later found not guilty. For over 35 years, accusations of murder shrouded one of the art world’s most storied couples. Host Helen Molesworth revisits Mendieta’s death and the trial that followed, and interrogates both the silence and the protest that have accompanied this story ever since.

What Did I Do?

Pushkin approached me wanting help making this show. They introduced me to Helen Molesworth (the host) and Lucas Zwirner. They had a great story about Ana Mendieta that was infamous in the art world but unknown by the wider world. The issue was the art world’s silence - no one wanted to talk, to rock the boat after all this time. I put together the team to work on the project and together we mapped out the series arc and found ways to get people in the normally hush hush art world to talk. Though the series is a traditional true crime series in some ways it also was a vehicle for getting into the question of what do we do with the art of (very) problematic men, and taking the listener into the secretive art world.
